Rethink your commute

Laval, Wednesday, April 29, 2009 – Earlier today, Vélo Québec Association and the Société de transport
de Laval (STL) kicked off the Éco Mobile à Laval campaign, the first initiative of its kind in Quebec. As part of this project, Vélo Québec Association will undertake a direct communication operation, going door to door to 20,000 Laval households to encourage residents to adopt greener commuting habits. The program calls for a $500,000 investment, which is split equally by the STL and the Ministère des Transports du Québec, through its provincial program to promote alternative forms of transportation. From April through July, some 30 active transportation advisors will cycle through seven neighbourhoods in Laval (Chomedey East, Chomedey West, Val-des-Brises, Duvernay, Vimont East, Vimont West and Laval-des-Rapides) to help residents find ways to reduce single-passenger automobile use and replace it with public transit, walking and/or biking. A questionnaire will be administered in order to establish an overview of residents' current commuting choices. An information kit, containing a detailed neighbourhood map and various other documents (STL transit map, bus schedules, etc.), will also be distributed to inform the population of the various options available to them. Finally, each household visited will receive information about a free bicycle loan service known as Try a Bike. This program will begin in July and will be run by Collège Montmorency. Vélo Québec Association is perhaps best known for its efforts to promote cycling. In recent years, it has also become a leader in the field of sustainable personal transportation. As such, it has contributed to improving the synergy between public transit and cycling (taxi/cycling, cycling/bus, bike parking facilities at bus terminals, etc.) and to promoting active transportation among school children through the On the Move to School Program launched in 2004. Vélo Québec's communication expertise and ability to engage the community were also instrumental in setting up the Quebec-wide network of bikeways known as the Route verte, an initiative that was begun in 1995. Vélo Québec Association, along with Vélo Québec Éditions, Vélo Québec Événements and Vélo Québec Voyages are divisions of Vélo Québec.
