Bibliovente 2009
attracted a large number of visitors and was a success. During this annual sale of used books, magazines, encyclopedias, DVDs and CD-ROMs originating from Laval’s libraries, more than 61,900 documents were sold, representing 85% of the documents offered. This marks a record!
The president of the Conseil de la culture and member of the City of Laval’s executive committee, Jocelyne Guertin, was thrilled by the success. “Once the sale was over, 2,300 documents were graciously offered to 16 Laval organizations,” she said. “Thanks to an agreement with the Service de l’environnement, the remaining 7,000 documents were expedited to the ‘Cultures à partager’ organization, whose mission is to send and distribute these cultural items in developing countries of the Francophonie.”
The Bibliovente enables thousands of documents to get a second life: novels, documentaries, comic books, children’s books and many others. The 2009 edition accumulated unprecedented sales of $33,000, which will be reinvested in the libraries’ animation programs. These programs allow citizens to participate in workshops, conferences, shows and training sessions in new technologies.
Just like last year, the organizers offered a new payment method according to weight: books were sold at $2.50/kg, except for encyclopedias, whose prices varied according to the title.
